Ignacio Cruz Aguigui

Our founder and principal attorney, Ignacio (“Ike”) Aguigui, has successfully represented clients in various matters including corporate transactions and litigation, class actions, contracts, complex civil litigation, lender liability cases, real estate transactions, probates, contracts, trusts and estates, administrative proceedings, and government agency representation, to name a few. Recently, he represented Guam taxpayers in a high-profile class action lawsuit in federal court where he was instrumental in securing a Permanent Injunction from the U.S. District Court of Guam requiring the Guam government to pay tax refunds in a timely fashion.

Attorney Aguigui was born in Guam and grew up in Merizo (http://guam.stripes.com/travel/get-know-guam-merizo), Guam’s southernmost village. He graduated from Inarajan High School as the class valedictorian. In high school, he was the recipient of various awards including the Principal’s Award, U.S. Congressional Award, and the Guam Merit Scholarship Award. He was also one of approximately 56 students nationwide named as a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Centennial Scholar. His early academic achievements won him admission to Yale University, where he earned his B.A., magna cum laude. As an undergraduate at Yale, he won prizes and research fellowships for study at the University of California at Berkeley and the University of California at San Francisco.

From Yale, Attorney Aguigui then served in various Government of Guam positions such as Special Assistant to former Governor of Guam Joseph F. Ada, Director of the Guam Medical Referral Office in Los Angeles, and Acting Director of the Guam Health Planning & Development Agency.

In 1994, Attorney Aguigui secured admission to another Ivy League Institution – Columbia Law School in New York City. He graduated from Columbia with honors, earning his Juris Doctor degree. While attending Columbia, he was named a Harlan Fiske Stone Scholar and served as an extern law clerk to the Hon. Barrington D. Parker Jr. (now Senior Circuit Judge for the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit). Attorney Aguigui is fluent in French. During law school, he studied at the University of Paris (Paris II - Panthéon-Assas) – widely regarded as the top law faculty in France – where he completed courses in French law and European Community law.

After graduating from Columbia, he was an associate attorney at the international law firm of Morrison & Foerster in San Francisco. In 1998, he returned to Guam to accept a position as a research attorney for the Hon. Katherine A. Maraman, Judge of the Superior Court of Guam (now Chief Justice, Supreme Court of Guam). He entered private practice in Guam as an associate attorney at Calvo & Clark LLP. In November 2002, he became legal counsel for the Transition Committee of then Governor-elect Felix Camacho and Lieutenant Governor-elect Kaleo Moylan. He then served as chief legal counsel at the Office of the Governor, leaving in July 2003 to return to private practice. He was a partner in another Guam firm until he established the Law Offices of Ignacio Cruz Aguigui.

Attorney Aguigui has previously served on various boards of directors including the Guam Election Commission, the Guam Legal Services Corporation, and the Guam Public Library. He has served on the Guam Supreme Court’s Subcommittee on Alternative Dispute Resolution, Commercial Arbitration Internal Subgroup, and former Guam Governor Felix Camacho’s Executive Committee on Government Reorganization. Attorney Aguigui’s wide-ranging accomplishments have won him recognition in Who’s Who in American Law, Who’s Who in America, and Who’s Who in the World.

Attorney Aguigui is also an avid musician, having studied music and musical instruments since childhood. He currently enjoys the piano, cello, violin, and flute.
